Summary

The Portable Coordinate Measuring Machine (PCMM) Quality Inspector is responsible for performing precision dimensional inspections using laser tracker systems to support aerospace component manufacturing, assembly, and verification activities. This role ensures that complex, tight-tolerance parts and assemblies meet engineering, customer, and regulatory requirements. The inspector will play a key role in providing accurate measurement data, supporting root cause investigations, and maintaining compliance to the Quality Management System.

Responsibilities

  • Set up, program, and operate PCCM equipment (e.g., Leica and Hexagon Absolute Arm) for high-accuracy dimensional inspections.
  • Perform part and assembly alignment, layout, first article inspections (FAI), and in-process verification using 3D metrology tools.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, 3D models, GD&T, and customer specifications to create accurate measurement plans.
  • Analyze measurement results, compare to nominal CAD data, and clearly document deviations.
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports, including measurement data, deviation records, and nonconformance documentation (NCRs).
  • Maintain accurate records in accordance with AS9100, internal procedures, and customer requirements.
  • Ensure inspections meet internal standards and all aerospace regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in root cause analysis and corrective action activities when dimensional issues are identified.
  • Support calibration and maintenance of laser tracker systems and associated tooling/fixtures.
  • Work closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality teams to plan inspections and optimize measurement strategies.
  • Provide technical guidance on dimensional measurement to production teams and assist in resolving build issues.

Qualifications

  • 2–5 years of experience in dimensional inspection, metrology, or precision measurement in aerospace or a similar high-precision manufacturing environment.
  • Hands-on experience operating laser tracker systems (FARO, API, Leica, or equivalent).
  • Strong understanding of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and ability to read complex aerospace engineering drawings.
  • Experience using metrology software such as PC-DMIS, Spatial Analyzer or similar.
  • Ability to interpret CAD models and work with digital manufacturing data.
  • Knowledge of AS9100 quality systems preferred.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple inspection priorities.

Key Competencies

  • High attention to detail and precision.
  • Strong spatial reasoning and 3D visualization skills.
  • The ability to understand complex GD&T and be able to apply that to metrology.
  • Technical curiosity and willingness to learn advanced metrology techniques.
  • Collaborative mindset with an ability to work across engineering and production teams.
  • Good communication skills - able to take highly technical concepts and effectively communicate and explain with those less familiar or less technical.
  • Dependable, organized, and safety-focused.
