M&P Test Technician

SUMMARY

The Materials and Processes team use their skills and expert knowledge to ensure all materials used meet the highest standards. The test technicians are responsible for ensuring that materials are manufactured and tested to the highest standards. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with specimen fabrication, microscopy, mechanical testing, and/or analytical or physical testing of metals and non-metallic (composite) materials. This role involves performing standard and non-standard test procedures, maintaining laboratory equipment, and supporting materials investigations across production and R&D programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain quality standards and requirements through testing and analysis of results.
  • Prepare specimens and conduct testing in accordance with lab procedures, safety policies, and applicable testing standards (ASTM, ISO, SAE, etc.).
  • Interpret test results, prepare accurate and detailed reports, and communicate findings to test engineers.
  • Maintain laboratory environment, including general housekeeping, preventative maintenance, and inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Participate in internal audits, equipment calibrations, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Assist in failure analysis and root cause investigations when required.
  • Mentor and train junior technicians and engineers as appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of two years of hands-on laboratory experience in materials testing or a material related field (composites, metallurgy, chemicals). Will consider people with related skills (layup, machining, non-material testing) on a case-by-case basis.
  • Proficient in at least one major area of laboratory operations (Specimen Prep, machining, testing)
  • Experience following standard procedures and interpreting test specifications and results.
  • Self-starter with good attention to detail
  • Computer literacy with proficiency with Microsoft Office products and general laboratory database software (Project, Jira, Confluence, etc.)
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Desired

  • Associate degree or technical certification in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
  • Experience with advanced analytical equipment (e.g., SEM, EDS, XRF, FTIR) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of ISO 17025 or Nadcap (materials testing) standards.
  • Familiarity with aerospace, automotive, or medical device material specifications is an asset.
  • Demonstrated leadership or training/mentorship experience.
