Front-End UI/UX Engineer (Ground Software)

Department: Aerospace Software Engineering
Location: Cedar Park, TX

ABOUT FIREFLY AEROSPACE

As an end-to-end responsive space company, Firefly Aerospace is on a mission to enable our world to launch, land, and operate in space – anywhere, anytime. Our small- to medium-lift launch vehicles, lunar landers, and orbital vehicles allow us to service the entire lifecycle of government and commercial missions from low Earth orbit to the Moon and beyond. We utilize carbon composite structures, patented propulsion technologies, and common components across our vehicles to iterate quickly, improve reliability, and deliver payloads at a lower cost.

SUMMARY
As a Front-End UI/UX Engineer on Firefly Aerospace’s Ground Software team, you will build the mission operations interfaces that enable real-time control of our spacecraft and launch vehicles. Operators depend on these applications for commanding, telemetry visualization, anomaly response, and situational awareness across the full mission lifecycle.

This is primarily a front-end engineering role—you will develop high-quality, performant UI components and full application views using modern web technologies. But we are also seeking someone who brings a designer’s eye for usability, layout, and workflow clarity. You should be comfortable gathering input from operators, translating mission workflows into user flows or wireframes, and shaping the UI experience before implementing it.

Your work will directly influence operator efficiency, mission safety, and Firefly’s next-generation ground system.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop modern, responsive, and polished mission-operations UIs using React, Redux, TypeScript, and related technologies.
  • Translate operator workflows and abstract requirements into user flows, wireframes, and intuitive UI behaviors.
  • Collaborate with mission operators and subsystem engineers to understand operational use cases and constraints.
  • Design and implement intuitive interfaces for telemetry visualization, command authoring, system health monitoring, timelines, alerts, and real-time data displays.
  • Ensure that UI components are reusable, maintainable, well-tested, and optimized for real-time or high-volume data.
  • Conduct lightweight user testing and incorporate operator feedback into UI and workflow improvements.
  • Collaborate closely with DevOps and backend engineers to ensure seamless integration with APIs, telemetry streams, and real-time data pipelines.
  • Participate in code reviews, front-end architecture discussions, and continuous improvement of UI development practices.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction, or related technical field.
  • 5+ years of professional experience developing front-end web applications.
  • Strong proficiency in modern web frameworks and languages such as React, Redux, TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3.
  • Ability to design UI workflows and produce wireframes or prototypes when needed.
  • Experience building user interfaces for complex, data-dense, or real-time systems.
  • Demonstrated understanding of interaction design principles and how they influence implementation choices.
  • Experience collaborating directly with users or operators to gather feedback and refine UI behavior.
  • Familiarity with front-end testing, performance optimization, and modern build toolchains.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to operate in a cross-disciplinary environment.

Desired

  • MS in Computer Science, HCI, Design Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience designing or implementing operational interfaces for aerospace, robotics, industrial systems, or other safety-critical domains.
  • Knowledge of real-time visualization libraries or telemetry display patterns.
  • Exposure to usability testing methods and heuristics.
  • Comfort with light visual design work in tools like Figma.
  • Experience contributing to and evolving design systems or component libraries.
  • Prior experience building tools for mission operations or control centers.
