SUMMARY

Firefly is looking for an experienced Test Engineer to manage one of our horizontal engine test stands. In this role you will help design, implement, and operate advanced test infrastructure for both existing and experimental engine designs.

Our Team has built the Firefly test site from the ground up to be a world class rocket testing facility. Capabilities include testing every part of the rocket from individual engines, valves and structures, to full scale mission duty cycle stage testing. As Firefly grows, additional test stands are being designed to not only support flight acceptance testing, but also the continued development of novel components and entirely new vehicles.

As a Responsible Engineer of an engine test stand at Firefly Aerospace, you will ensure your systems are healthy and ready for use in both engine component and full scale engine testing. You will work closely with design engineers to validate system performance and reliability, identifying improvements and required maintenance, ensuring work proceeds in a timely manner. While test operations are active you will be responsible for monitoring the health and functionality of the Ground Support Equipment (GSE), including rapid diagnostic of malfunctioning equipment. Additionally, you will work with design engineers, technicians, and vendors to drive system upgrades and improve system functionality, operations, and automation.

This role is located north of Cedar Park, in Briggs, TX.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ownership of engine test stand and system function, maintenance and upgrades of all including mechanical, fluid, and electrical systems
  • Manage test stand scheduling for operations and maintenance down time
  • Develop and execute system validations, activations, upgrades and other tests required to ensure your stand is ready to support testing
  • Monitor and evaluate test stand performance during test campaigns
  • Coordinate with test operations and technician teams to develop systems that improve operational efficiency
  • Use engineering principles and fundamentals to provide novel solutions for technically challenging problems
  • Collaborate with the ground systems design teams to establish individual task scope and feasibility
  • Demonstrate a willingness to seek creative, new and different ways to accomplish outcomes.
  • Design with Safety in mind, will be working with cryogenics, strong oxidizers and pyrophoric chemicals.
  • Work with the vehicle engineering team to develop requirements for test system designs and modifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • BS in Mechanical, Aerospace, or related engineering discipline
  • 3+ Years' professional engineering experience in a Test Engineering role or equivalent (launch vehicle experience preferred)
  • Ability to perform computations for fluid systems (e.g., pressure drop, valve timing, etc.) for liquids, cryogenic liquids, and gases
  • Experience with 3D and 2D CAD software
  • Proven ability to read and understand technical drawings, including GD&T and P&IDs
  • Works well in a collaborative multidisciplinary environment
  • Able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high pressure fast-paced environment
  • Self-motivated; requires minimum direction
  • Ability to create and maintain detailed scheduled for testing operations and test stand upgrades
  • Familiarity with instrumentation and instrumentation deployment methods
  • Familiarity with data acquisition and control methods
  • Plumbing system fabrication experience

Desired

  • Test RE experience
  • Experience testing liquid fueled rocket engines.
  • Experience with TEA-TEB or other pyrophoric or hypergolic
  • 5+ years’ experience or an advanced degree
  • Exceptional comprehension of engineering fundamentals including structural design, fluid systems and thermodynamics
  • Exceptional writing and verbal communication skills
