SUMMARY

At Firefly, we believe that building a reliable and inexpensive launch vehicle requires the most reliable, production efficient propulsion and fluids components available. In tandem, our team is also designing, building, testing, and launching our first lunar lander this year. On the Components team we design valves, actuators, and other hardware tailored to the specific needs of our launch and spacecraft vehicles. Our team of engineers have cradle-to-grave ownership over the entire product lifecycle from initial conception through qualification and operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work in cross-functional teams in analysis, manufacturing, and test engineering
  • Work with the program teams to develop hardware upgrades in alignment with ambitious performance and cost goals
  • Influence the strategic direction for new components designs and/or upgrades for new programs or missions
  • Provide technical guidance, and mentoring to the components engineering team to ensure all products are designed to meet program technical and schedule needs
  • Perform failure investigations of designs and participate in the resolution of the root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Create, review and approve processes for assembly and test for development/qualification testing of designs.
  • Interface with internal and external customers to define and manage component-related risks.
  • Inform and, when needed, develop technical documents, policies, and workflows including: Design standards, design databooks, analysis reports, and manufacturing workflows.
  • Develop and validate simulation-based methods against subscale and full-scale testing

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • BS in Aerospace Engineering or related engineering discipline
  • 10+ years' experience in a fluid systems or components design-related role
  • Exceptional comprehension of engineering fundamentals including fluid mechanics, heat transfer, structural analysis, materials, and processes
  • Strong understanding of fluid systems aspects such as fluids systems sizing, valve design and operation, instrumentation, flexible element design & integration and fluid fittings
  • Skilled in creating analytical/numerical models of engineering devices and processes
  • Ability to successfully manage complex projects
  • Works well in a collaborative, fast paced, multidisciplinary environment
  • Demonstrated interest in advancing 'newspace'
  • Self-motivated with minimum direction required
  • Ability to creatively develop economical solutions
  • Enjoys technical mentorship

Desired

  • Served as a Responsible Engineer for a rocket development project in a fluids related subsystem
  • Component or fluids test experience
  • Knowledge of high-pressure, cryogenic, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical power systems
  • Experience with valve and regulator design
  • Experience with liquid oxygen or other cryogenic operations
  • Experience modeling fluid networks
  • Experience with rapid development techniques for hardware
